I was stationed in Fulda in 1984-1987. Had a great time. Also looking for a old girlfriend named Annetta Wiegant. Maybe she will read this and know I think about her often

Hi, I served with B Troop 1st Squadron 14th Armored Cav 1966-1969. The longest 2 1/2 years of my life! BUT, I am proud to have served. I was there for the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia August 1968 and it was the scariest alert we had ever been on! I believe we stayed deployed in our alert positions for the better part of a week. Long enough that they eventually started bringing us back to barracks a few at a time to shower, get clean fatigues and head back out to the alert position. As I am typing this I am listening to President Reagans memorial service. I am thankful that he had the courage to stand up to tyranny and demand that the wall come down. While serving on the zone I never dreamed that the day would come! Thanks for the website! Roy W. Patterson veteran B Troop 1st Squadron 14th Armored Cavalry Regiment 1966-1969

Just a short note to mention that I had the luxury of spending two outstanding and some of the most prolific years of my life stationed in Bad Hersfeld, Germany, from 1986-88. Although my duties back then did not allow me to patrol the border in an active role like many did, I managed to visit the Grenze many times and in geographical different areas. Back then, the thought of it ever coming down was categorically unthinkable, impossible, and never entered into my mind. To walk up to the border back then, but not be able go beyond it, spelled out the big line between two very different worlds. And now, you can not only walk up to it, and yet walk past it, and well beyond, today; is amazing. That line fell, and now not only can we can see what is(was) on the other side, but go beyond without fear. True freedom. I thank those who served with me, the past, and the future. I am proud that we were a part of it, and were recognized (via the memorial). Special thanks everyone who contributed to leaving a chunk of history for all of us to remember. Special thanks to the museum staff. Let the DMZ (in Korea) be the next wall to come down. PJP

I just kind of surfed into the website and have found it be be very well done. I served in the 1/11 ACR "Blackhorse" from January of 1989 to March of 1991. I was a Spc. in Howitzer Battery 1/11 ACR. I put in my fair share of time at OP Alpha and will never forget the time I spent there are the camaradarie that I felt with my fellow Blackhorse troopers. I was there to witness the collapse of the hideous Iron Curtain and will remember November 9, 1989 for all time. However, I am pleased to see that the memory of so many interped souls standing guard on the Frontier of Freedom is being preserved. My sincerest thanks for all those who have served or are now serving our the cause of freedom around the globe. The threats today may be different than they were then Allons and God Bless, Cliff Kolb

I will be in Germany this July, and have allocated one full day to spend at Point Alpha. Problem is, I'm having a hard time figuring out the best way to get there, what town to stay in, etc. I've sent two emails to the email address provided on the website, but no one has responded to my question. Can anyone else offer some advice? Thank you, Steven Uhl-Everett, Washington, USA

In December, 2003, I had the privilege to visit Point Alpha. We Americans had done some bad things, which we refer to as sin, but one thing is, we sacrificially have given to help other parts of the world when they were in need. I found the German people to be great people. I'm so glad that we have men and women of courage, in the past, and presently (this day the news has come of the capture, by Americans, of Sudaam Husein)who have given their lives to free others! That is Love. Per I Corinthians 13.

I was privileged to visit Point Alpha with my father, retired Army Lt. Col. Louis J. Gerner in 1983. We were hosts of (then Major) Steve Rippe, who came from our home town of Simsbury, Connecticut. It was quite an experience going to the border of East Germany. As a child, we were stationed in Augsburg, Germany (in the early 1960's) at the time of the Berlin Crisis. I remember seeing convoys of U.S. Army trucks on the Autobahn heading toward Berlin, and I remember my father being on alert, and we had no idea where he was or when he'd be home. It was like being an eyewitness to history, although I didn't know it at the time.

I spent almost five years in the 11th ACR from 1987-1991. I flew the UH-1 and later the UH-60 when the 4th Squaderon received them. I made many flights to OP ALPHA and the OPs we had along the border. I am glad to see that many of these things remain as to a reminder of Europe in another time. The best times of my twenty-eight years of active duty were spent in Fulda and the 11th ACR.

I was born in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, so it was quite a change to move to Bamburg, West Germany. I was a recon platoon leader in the 2nd Squadron of the 2nd ACR. Our border garrison was in Coburg with the BGS. My wife and daughter lived in the old city and became close friends with Paul and GERTI MASCHKE AND THEIR SON ROLPH. I HAVE RETURNED MANY TIMES AND THEY HAVE VISITED ME HERE IN ARIZONA. WHEN I WAS STATIONED ON THE BORDER IN 1965, 1966 IT SEEMED IMPOSSIBLE THAT WORLD WAR III WOULD NOT HAPPEN OR THAT THE EAST GERMAN BORDER WOULD EVER COME DOWN. THE EVENTS IN 1989 WERE NOTHING SHORT OF A MIRACLE. I AM SO GLAD THAT THIS MEMORIAL AREA EXISTS.

It's been a while since we visited your website. Always good to do so and great to visit OP Alpha when we are in Germany. It brings back many memories. I served with the 3/14th ACR in Bad Hersfeld from 1970 to 1971, and with HHT, 14th ACR (then in May 72 - HHT, 11th ACR) from 1971 to 1973. My wife (Gabi) is from Bad Hersfeld. It has been so pleasant, since 1989, to come back home to visit friends and family in a unified, peaceful Germany without the border (zonengrenze). There were other American OP's north of OP Alpha: OP Romeo (along the autobahn near Herleshausen), OP India (near Ifta) and OP Oscar (near Witzenhausen - north of Bad Sooden/Allendorf). Spend many a cold winter's day and nights along "The Trace". Thanks for keeping the history "alive". Glenn & Gabriele (geb Vogt) Allardyce Houston, Texas USA

Machen Sie weiter so. Mit freundlichen Grüssen Markus Stroh Kreisjugendfeuerwehrwart Lahn-Dill Wetzlar

Meine lieben Freunde ! Ich möchte einmal Bezug nehmen , auf den Namen Grenzmuseum Rhön Point Alpha e.V. ! In Freundschaft euer Gunter Döhring
